Marketing Yourself - Wireless Recovery

Source: WirelessJobs.com ( by Harry Daniel Richards)

I was laid off from my job in March of 2008. It was the most painful separation I have ever experienced and since I came to LA 5 years ago to work for this company, I am feeling very disconnected. I was responsible for the companies wireless technology and have been in wireless since 1985.

This the longest time I have ever been unemployed since I graduated from college in 1977. In this time, (spent wandering around through my network looking for a job) I have learned a couple of things.

1. I will never be able to retire as long as I am married to my wife of 30 years - I am driving her nuts
2. I will never be able to retire regardless of who I am married to - I am driving myself nuts
3. I need to simplify my life - its amazing how much money I have spent on stuff I don't need
4. My kids are all out of high school and need to move out
5. Watching other people go to work is depressing when you have no where to go
6. Listening to other people complain about their jobs is infurating when you don't have a job
7. Your resume is never good enough for those people who review them and want you to pay for improvements
8. A lot of the jobs posted on job boards aren't real and are really scams for people who want you to pay them
9. My professional network isn't as good as I thought it was
10. I spent the first part of my career being underqualified - now it seems I am over qualified. When was I qualified?
11. My wife needs to go to work
12. I don't market myself very well

Number 12 is the most painful piece, since I have been responsible for wireless sales and marketing a couple of times in my career. However, all the jobs I have had in the last 15 years have been a result of knowing people so I didn't have to send out resumes and interview - just show up and go to work.

So now the journey begins to learn how to market myself better and here's what I have done so far.

Hooked up with a professional coach - I didn't know they were out there, but I need someone to get me on track, help me plan and hold me accountable. I miss the structure of a job

Went to a local university and met with the Dean of Business (and facility) I am offering to lecture on wireless technology and business in general

Get business cards that identify me as a "Technology Consultant" and start attending some events

Wrote a white paper on mobile marketing to send to ad companies to generate some interest

None of it has generated anything yet, but I have just started to focus on the self marketing aspect so it will probably take some time. I don't really want to start my own business again so what I am really looking for is a job. Nothing fancy, don't need to rule the world or be a CTO, but need something to do for the next 15 years or so.

What I am going to try and do is use this blog to track my efforts. Anyone that wants to jump in is welcome.

Anyone that wants to give me a job is more than welcome!

Dan

Senior Recruiting Manager, T-Mobile (Bellevue, WA)

Although I've moved on to a new venue, I still have many friends at T-Mobile and would enjoy helping the right person land in my previous role.

This role manages the "incredibly awesome" engineering recruiting team, supporting all Engineering and Operations recruiting activity across the U.S., as well as the Network Operations Centers in WA, TX, GA, and NJ.

The right candidate will have experience managing a remote team, and preference goes to those candidates with wireless / telecom recruiting experience (they aren't asking that you know how to change out a radio at a cell site, but it would be a big plus if you have more than a passing understanding of wireless technology).

If you have an interest, send me an email and I will put you in touch with the recruiter.

Fashion Geeks, Get Your Wi-Fi On

ThinkGeek just made it easy for wireless geeks the world over. Too lazy to bust out the laptop to see if wi-fi access is available? No prob - as long as you remembered to wear your handy-dandy Wi-Fi Detector Shirt.

    That's right.

The glowing bars on the front of the shirt dynamically change as the surrounding wi-fi signal strength fluctuates.

In the words of the ThinkGeek marketeers:

Finally you can get the attention you deserve as others bow to you as their reverential wi-fi god, while geeky chicks swoon at your presence.
Uh, yeah. Anyway, as campy as it is, I'd like to get one of these for my geek recruiting friends for Christmas. They'll love it, won't they?

Google Offers Summer Jobs to Geeks and Nerds

    Source: The California Aggie online

Google's Summer of Code program was designed in 2005 as a way to give students paid experience working with open source programming instead of working mundane summer jobs.

Hawthorn said her boss, Chris Bower, originally felt it was a problem that smart college students were wasting their summer flipping burgers instead of pursuing computer experience.

Google created the Summer of Code program that chose students from over 90 countries and financed over 400 student projects the first year, according to Google's website. Interest surged -the second year alone saw a 200 student project increase.

During the summer of 2006, Google spent $3 million financing projects all over the world, which rose to $4.5 million in 2007.

This past summer, students were given stipends to write open source code for about 100 different open source groups, which gave the students a pool of ideas about which to write their codes and guidance when creating codes.

Now students get paid $5,000 if they successfully create software by the end of the summer - paid in increments throughout the summer.

    Total Geeks Build Businesses Faster

BusinessWeek's Karen E. Klein writes about a recent survey which found that employee issues and managing information technology were the top challenges faced by growth-oriented entrepreneurial companies.

I'm sure the survey uncovers a lot of what we all believe to be true. I'm just not sure that these two topics (employee issues and managing IT) aren't the top challenges faced by all kinds of companies.

Klein then posts excerpts from her interview with Harry J. Harczak Jr., CDW executive vice-president, about the findings HERE.

    Outsourcing on Steroids

Brilliant at Breakfast points to a new trend in outsourcing..."outsourcing FROM India."

It's absolutely unbelievable to me, that, jobs which were taken from U.S. workers and outsourced to India, are now being outsourced to other parts of the world (all in the name of cheaper/faster/better).

And, pray-tell, what "developing country" is of interest to those Indian companies wishing to outsource? Low-cost areas of the U.S., of course.

Geez. I've got deja-vu all over again.

    Tech Jobs ... Recession Proof?

Well, not exactly. However, U.S. IT employment is higher now than it has been this decade --3.58 million IT pros employed, based on second-quarter Bureau of Labor Statistics, compared with a previous high of 3.46 million in 2001 and a low of 3.29 million in 2004.

And, in a recently published InformationWeek article, it states that 62% of companies plan to increase their IT spending, 23% to keep it flat, and 15% to decrease. Bottomline: spending has edged up, but staffs haven't gotten fat. Impact: Better.

Check out this recent InformationWeek article by Chris Murphy to get the full scoop on how Tech Jobs are expected to fare, given that
three-fourths of economists say there's a 30% chance or higher chance the U.S. economy will slip into recession.

    Recruitment by Attraction

Recruiting with a blog takes courage.

That's the first line in John Sumser's May 29th post titled, Humanizing.

When I added a blog to my recruiting arsenal toolkit back in 2004, I didn't necessarily think it took a great amount of courage. In fact, I felt like I was jumping on the blogging bandwagon a bit late, assuming I would just be one of thousands of recruiting-blogs welcomed to the blogosphere that year.

Funny. Maybe the courage has been more in my decision to continue blogging, in spite of the fact that many recruiters echoed the sentiments of the bandit in the 1948 classic, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre:

"BadgesBlogs? We ain't got no badgesblogs. We don't need no badges blogs. I don't have to show you any stinking badges blogs!"

John's article refers to Kristi Young, a colleague and former T-Mobile team member. Knowing Kristi well, I applaud the fact that she's sticking with her story and using her blog to reach the job-seeker. As John notes, Kristi uses her blog...

"...as a way to humanize and expedite her intense communications processes."
    John finishes by adding,

There's a mercenary reason for using public disclosure as a tool. It's simple.
The technique attracts candidates by making the Recruiter (and therefore the
    company) more approachable.
Preach it Sumser. That's the heartbeat of why-I-blog.

And while WirelessJobs.com doesn't provide the honey to generate Monster-kinda-traffic, it's solely responsible for connecting me (if even in a small way) to approximately thousands (yes, thousands) of people - most of whom I would have never met otherwise.

    Recruitment by attraction? Absolutely.

    Gitomer says,

All things being equal, people want to do business with their
    friends.

All things being not so equal, people STILL want to do business with their friends.

So, let me ask you this...would you rather develop a relationship with an authentic recruiter who understands the importance of "approachability," or one who has charismatically mastered the art of schmoozing?

    That's what I thought.

    Me too.

We Few, We Happy Few, We Band of Bloggers

One week ago, Jason Davis did the inevitable...he signed his final post on Recruiting.com.

The comments flowed and colleagues gave their final tributes (save one frady-cat blogger who left an anonymous comment).

It's been a wild ride for Jason. His late nights spent blogging and brainstorming have helped him carve out a legacy (even though he'd never admit it) within the community of recruiting bloggers that will not be soon forgotten.

And, thankfully, we don't have to look far to see what Jason's got up his sleeve. He's had the domain RecruitingBlogs.com for a while, and it's now a full-fledged community - check it out - but when you do, invite me to be your friend.

Finally, I'd like to repeat the comments I left on Jason's final Recruiting.com post. My comments, of course, are tongue-in-cheek, but in every bit of humor, there's certainly an element of truth:

In Jason's honor, let me now wax poetic on this final day with a bit of revised prose from Shakespeare's Henry V, 1598:

    KING HENRY (Jason) V:
    This story shall the good man teach his son;
And the remembrance of Recruiting.com shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
    But we in it shall be remember'd;
    We few, we happy few, we band of bloggers;

For he to-day that posts on a weblog with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen across the globe now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That blogged with us at Recruiting.com.

    Cheers to you, Jason Davis.

You are the King Henry of Blogging.

    Tell Me Something Good, TechGeek

Deloitte survey finds North American tech CEOs taking their search overseas to solve domestic talent shortage

Chaka Kahn made it popular long before it was playing on the corporate strings:

Tell me something good...tell me that you love me
However, it appears that today's ever-hot technology talent, is still failing to respond to the statement in a way that puts Technology CEO's at ease. In short, while the CEO's do what they can to attract the best, keeping them is a completely different story.

According to a Deloitte survey released today, attracting and retaining top talent has become the leading operational challenge for North American technology CEOs.

As a result, the respondents of this year's Technology Fast 500 CEO Survey-Deloitte's annual survey of Technology Fast 500 company leaders-are taking their talent searches overseas (read the full press release HERE).

Almost two thirds (64 percent) of CEOs felt it was important to look overseas for the top talent they need to grow their businesses-even though 67 percent indicate their country's education system is successful in producing qualified talent. However, the majority of CEOs are concerned that government restrictions on employment visas will prevent them from obtaining the overseas talent they need to successfully grow.

"Given today's race for top talent, it is not surprising that North American tech CEOs find it more difficult to attract, develop, and retain talent than to achieve profitability,"
explains John Ruffolo, National Leader of Deloitte's Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) Group.

"It is only the companies that win the hearts and minds of their people that will ensure their growth in both the short and long term. As a result, CEOs are engaging people like never before."
    So, Recruiter...HR Manager...Technology CEO....I've got one question:

What are you doing to win the hearts and minds of your people?

Job Search Tight for College Grads

Interesting insight from Experience Inc's fifth annual College Graduate Survey.

More than 2,800 graduating seniors took Experience's online poll, and nearly 50% of those who had already started their job searches at the time of the survey were still looking. The results, released in early April, also showed that only 22% of these students had offers in hand. Another 15% planned to continue on to graduate school, and 10% had yet to begin searching.

So, college grad, where are you?

The Father of Wireless (and Wireless Jobs)

Martin Cooper. Just an average genius working for the man at Motorola .

But on April 3, 1973, Dr. Martin Cooper placed a call to rival Joel Engel, head of research at AT&T's Bell Labs, while walking the streets of New York City talking on the first Motorola DynaTAC prototype.

And so the levers of cell phone obsession began to turn.

10 years later, the Brick was born, and those who had the cash dropped almost $4,000 for the 10-inch, 28-ounce anchor created by Coop and his team of engineers at Moto.

The differences between Cooper's Brick and today's phone? Can you say, calendar, calculator, alarm clock, gps, video, web browser, and MP3 Player?

Dahl's article offers up a bit of history that I find seriously amusing:

Analysts in 1983 predicted that by 2000, there would be 900,000 wireless users in the United States.

    Reality?

There were more than 100 million wireless users by the end of 2000, and 229 million at the end of last year. My family alone accounts for four of the 229 million (I'll be adding three more in the not-to-distant future).

Yes, my Blackberry is never far from reach. I exchange text messages with my team late at night and early in the morning (cut it out, Jen!) ; )

On the chance that I've misplaced it (along with my keys), I'm irritated 'til it's safely back in my front pocket.

I glance at my messages while driving to work (just kidding, Mr. State Farm Insurance Man!). I send my wife and children secret messages throughout the day. I am always connected.

Geez, thanks Mr. Cooper. No, really, thanks! We complain about being overly-connected, but if we're honest, most of us wouldn't have it any other way.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying it's healthy. But it's our reality (and I like it).

Reality also says that about one-fourth of all wireless calls have at least one problem (2006 study by J.D. Power and Associates). Whether it's dropped calls, disconnected calls, static, or interference, the problems exist. And if we're grumpy when we can't find our Blackberry, we're even grumpier when we drop a call.

    Why?

Because we can't stand not being connected! Like I said, I'm not proud of this particular mental illness, but I'm not about to change. Even if that means I have to crawl on my roof line at midnight in the middle of a thunder storm, I'm going to make that phone call, by golly!

Even the Father of Wireless (Cooper) agrees with us. He's now 79 years old, owns six cell phones, carries three and pays the bills for 20. He was even talking on his cell phone for his interview with Dahl, explaining that he understands our obsession, our need, to have a signal:

"When you've got that phone, you feel connected, you feel part of a group,"
    says Cooper.
"Who's the group? It's everyone in the world, on your cell phone."
Yep, Dr. Cooper still gets it.

Because the most important thing is being able to stay connected to the most important people in our lives.

    Thanks Father Cooper Wireless.

Here's to 30 more years of wireless connectivity and the jobs that make it happen.

Can Blogging Help You Get a New Job?

Sarah E. Needleman (Associate editor for CareerJournal.com) posts a nice article in today's WSJ (subscription required) about blogging and how it can help you get a new job.

    Here's a short excerpt:

Corporate recruiters have long surfed the Web to vet potential hires, but now they are also surfing blogs to unearth job candidates, expanding their talent pool and gaining insights they say they can't get from résumés and interviews.

If you are a recruiter and you aren't surfing the blogs, you are already behind the eight ball.

If you are surfing the blogs but aren't making hires, at a minimum, you are putting yourself in great networking stead. And, personally, I'm finding no greater opportunity than blogs, for developing relationships with candidates for future opportunities.

One of my goals is to use the blogosphere to make new contacts every day (ok, at least one).
And for the most part, I consistently meet this goal.

As an example, it wasn't too long ago that I left a comment on the WirelessisFun.com site, and as a result, struck up a friendship with the guys behind the WirelessisFun firewall. We now have a pending podcast for sometime in the near future and an almost daily dialogue. However, I'm really looking forward to talking my buddy Dan in to a new career with T-Mobile USA.

It's a long relo to Bellevue, WA from Romania, but hey, anything's possible in the blogosphere.

Needleman also posted an article titled,

What Job Seekers Can Gain From Blogs about Recruiting

Without question, the blogosphere is the place to go for job hunters who are seeking advice (of course, I'm slightly biased to this point, but it's because I'm right). And modest.

Here's a few of the blogs noted in the article - great choices - I read every one of these blogs and believe that job-search savvy job seekers should be reading them too.

  • YourHRGuy.com
  • Cheezhead
  • Resume Hell: Dumb Stuff I Read on Resumes
  • JibberJobber
  • Brazen Careerist
  • Kaleidoblog
  • Guerilla Marketing for Job Hunters: The Blog
  • the CHAD

  • Go get 'em job seekers!

And don't forget, just one visit a day, that's all I ask.

    JobGeek O' the Week: Freakquency

Hat is tipped to this week's JobGeek O' the Week, Bruce Hubbert and his blog,

    FREAKQUENCY

I like just about any blog that's related to geek, wi-fi, wireless networking, bluetooth, wifi, wimax, 802.11, mesh networking, wlan, vofi, RF, wireless, etc., so it's no surprise that I found Freakquency today on Technorati.

Here's a few tidbits on our JobGeek O' the Week:

    He got his own spot on the History Channel to tout his expertise - check it out HERE;

He's a Principal Systems Engineer in Silicon Valley at this company,

He has his own Wireless Mesh Network HERE.

And finally, here's Bruce's LinkedIn Profile!

Wow, Bruce, not sure how you are going to handle all this newfound fame. Whatever you do, don't let it go to your meraki head!

I hope you fair better than last week's Geek.

I hear Jeremy has since had to buy a new server (the crash was pretty severe due to the increased traffic), and, he's had to escape to the underground blogging community (where all A-Listers eventually go so they can blog, shop, and simply walk the streets in peace - far away from the masses vying for their attention link-love).

    Best of luck, Bruce.

Job Seeker: Make Your Best Job Interview Your Last One

Scott Ginsberg posted this morning about his beloved Cardinals.

Actually, the post isn't about the Cards so much, but he uses the Cards season opener as a platform to encourage us to be more like David Eckstein.

If you don't follow Baseball, you don't know Eck. But you should. He's the perfect example of a major-leaguer who, day in - day out, gives his absolute best on the field.

He doesn't coast. He doesn't save himself. He leaves it all on the field.

    Here's why Scott loves Eck:

    Because every grounder matters.
Because he gives it his all, every time.
Because he plays harder than anybody.
Because he actually sprints on and off the field, every inning.

Did Eck win the MVP last year because he's lucky?

    Don't think so.

If Eck were asked to name the one game, in all his years of playing, that he believes to be his best, Scott believes Eck would say,

    My last one.
Here's Scott's takeaway: Make your best one your last one.

The best sales call you ever made…was your last one.
The best speech you ever gave…was your last one.
The best report you ever handed in…was your last one.
The best meeting you ever had with your staff…was your last one.
The best customer service phone call…was your last one.

Now, let's make this even more relevant for my audience: the job seeker.

Are you looking for a job?

Are you currently engaged in job interviews?

Make your best interview your last one.

If so, it just might be your last one.

    Resume Blunders from Hell

I visited my buddy at Resume Hell today.

As usual, I was not disappointed.

Here's a clip from one of the resumes they recently received....and apparently, this person takes their hobby very seriously:

"Hobbies: I enjoy cooking Chinese and Italians"

Ok, this person either has a very sick sense of humor, or, they failed to contact Louise for some expert resume assistance.

    Let's hope it's the latter.

The ERE Streaker ... it's just a fad, right?

With all due respect to David Manaster, I couldn't help but post this pic.

Jim Durbin emailed me today asking if I'd ever posted this picture (I recently sent him a copy).

Honestly, I can't remember whether I've ever posted it or not, but it's just too good to pass up.

In light of our pending blogger's panel at the ERExpo in San Diego next month, I thought I'd share this picture with all the folks out there who think blogging is just a fad.

You know, a fad...like mood rings, pet rocks, and, well, streakers.

If you share this "blogging is a fad" philosophy, I hope you'll join us in San Diego.

We'd love to get your perspective. And, we'd love to get your questions (in fact, questions in advance would be terrific).
Send your blogging questions to us (Grimm, Hamilton, Durbin, Smith) in advance; we'll compile all questions and address them at the Expo.

    Email your questions to: wirelessheadhunter@gmail.com.
By the way, I hear that this is already the largest attendance for an ERExpo event on record. And with this many people under one roof, I wouldn't be surprised to see a recruiter bolt across the stage in his birthday suit, just as Dr. Sullivan is presenting the Recruiter of the Year Award.

Oh dang. You know what they say about the power of suggestion.

    Sorry 'bout that, Doc.

Pretend I never said that, Levy.

    *** UPDATE ***

Just saw Manaster's post about offering ERExpo attendees free wireless in San Diego. Nice job, David.

Geek 'o the Week: Jeremy Fain, Tech IT Easy

This week's "Geek o' the Week" award goes to Mr. Jeremy Fain who serves as chief editor/blogger of "Tech IT Easy."

You can get even more scoop on Jeremy via his LinkedIn Profile found HERE.

I'm guessing, after reviewing Jeremy's profile, that he's smarter than about 99% of the population - honestly, this guy has some serious credentials behind him.

And it shows on his blog.

Take a deep breath and see if you can read this whole paragraph without taking another breath (it's all the topics that Jeremy blogs about):

information systems & technology, software economics, innovation, new product / service development, digital strategy, software engineering, remote / mobile / wireless technologies, VoIP, IPTV, blogs, telecommunication business models, computer networks architecture, project management, user-generated content philosophy, entrepreneurial finance, outsourcing, operations - logistics - e-procurement - supply chain management, customer relationship management, telecom billing, clusters of innovation, e-Business, e-Commerce, start-up launch, fast-growing ventures management, globalization + some useless stuff (usually getting the most visits & comments)
Congrats, Jeremy. I hope you can live up to the fame and fortune that accompany this royal award.

5 Tips for making yourself more findable on the web

ComputerWorld asked a great question this week and it reminded me of the tree-falling-in-the-forest question:

If someone searches for you on the Web and comes up empty-handed, do you exist?
Tim Bray, director of Web technologies at Sun Microsystems Inc, says,

In today’s job market, turning up missing on the Web may not be a fatal flaw, and it’s probably better than having a search result in a photo of you in a hula skirt. But over time, the lack of a Web presence — particularly for IT professionals — may well turn from a neutral to a negative.
Bray believes that senior-level candidates looking for jobs with core technology providers should have some type of presence on the web:

If someone came looking for a senior-level job and had left no mark on the Internet, I’d see that as a big negative ... most companies would rather have somebody who has demonstrated the propensity to contribute, and one [sign] of that is going out and getting involved, joining in the discussion.”
To that end, Mary Brandel (ComputerWorld) offers up 5 tips for making yourself more "findable" on the web:

    1). Know where people look
Check out Google and Yahoo - what will googlers discover about you?

Be aware that many recruiters also use tools such as Technorati, Daypop, and Blogdigger (if you are a recruiter and aren't familiar with these sites, you should be).

    2). Start a blog
Some companies sponsor corporate blogs and encourage employee participation (in fact, I just read on ERE that Cingular (the new at&t) is starting a recruiting blog (of course, I wait with much anticipation).

But you can also establish your own through free blog hosting sites such as Blogger.com, (my personal home-away-from-home) LiveJournal.com, Blog-City.com,and Xanga.com.

3). Join the open-source code community (if you are truly a geek)

    4). Build a Web page

    5). Create a Web profile
I've created multiple web profiles - maybe I'm a bit overboard, but when it comes to recruiters in the wireless industry, I want to be found.

I have a Ziggs profile HERE (Ziggs was down so I couldn't get to my profile) ; a Jobster profile HERE; a Ziki profile HERE; a Naymz profile HERE; and of course, a LinkedIn profile HERE.

    5.5). Join a Community
I'm adding my own personal touch to Mary's list - if you haven't joined a community related to your livelihood, you are missing out.

I recently created a Wireless-Jobs Community Group on Yahoo! HERE (you'll have to login to Yahoo to be directed to the Wireless-Jobs Community). Feel free to join and network with other recruiters engaged in the wireless community.

So, job seeker, let me ask you this... what are you doing to participate in the conversation?

Top 6 Reasons Recruiters are Irritating

Nick Roy (Employment Management Strategies for the 21st Century) posted earlier this month about the irritating things we do as recruiters.

Here's Nick's top 6 reasons for considering recruiters irritating human beings:

    Posting in all caps

    Marketing to companies

Pretending to have good candidates or pretending to know what the company does

Presenting candidates that are mined from job boards

Thinking that every contingency placement is worth 30%

    Trying to bypass HR
C'mon Nick. LOTS OF PEOPLE POST IN ALL CAPS.

    But, you're right...it's irritating.

I will take you to task on the marketing piece, however.

I mean, hey, marketing makes the world go 'round. And, really, Nick, if you'll just hire one more person from me in the next 24 hours, I'll include a set of 24 Ginsu knives. But you must act now!!! Operators are standing by...

Ok, no humor on this one:

30% is nothing compared to the value that one star employee can add to your bottomline in one calendar year.

    That's the cold, hard truth.

I will agree with you on the candidates from the job boards scenario. It cracks me up, but it also makes me mad. Hey, it's happened to me too!

But somebody had to take the time to do the digging.

Here's reality....if they are the right candidate and they fit the compensation piece, and they are excited about the opportunity...it really doesn't matter how they landed in my lap.

Nick has some great thoughts....read his complete post HERE.

The Carnival of the Job Search @ WirelessJobs.com

I'm really not a fan of the carnival. Guess I get a little freaked out by the sideshow acts. I just can't figure giving my hard-earned money to see a woman with lots of facial hair.

Howevuh...I've been diggin' the idea of the blog carnival lately. I got my first invite a few months back to participate in a blog carnival by our good buddy Jason Alba at JibberJobber.

Of course, I was too lazy to participate (or I forgot), but I liked the idea nonetheless.

So, I decided it was time to do a "Carnival of the Job Search."

Two reasons why I like this idea:

    1) It has the opportunity of connecting me with other people I might never have the chance to meet. Yep, this is really the only reason.

    2) It's a lot easier than asking people to write a post. All that's required is that they send me a job posting that they'd like me to reference in my weekly "carnival of the job search" post.

So, what is the carnival of the job search? It's simply a weekly post on WirelessJobs.com that includes job postings and links from various recruiters around the planet. Well, at least those who decide to participate in the carnival.

    The important stuff:

So, how do you, Recruiter, participate? Simply submit a job posting via the "Submit an Article Form" no later than Thursday @ 3:00PM CT of each week.

I will compile each of the job postings and submit in one posting on Friday afternoon of each week.

I will post at least one job from each requester, depending on the total number of submissions for that week's carnival.

    Job Posting Format:

Job Posting should be in this format (no job descriptions!):

Manager, RF Engineering - Atlanta, GA,
    T-Mobile USA
For more information, please email Dennis @ wirelessheadhunter@gmail.com

Note: the link to the job description is in the job title.

If the job is already posted on a blog or career site, please provide the link so that I can reference within the post.

I will preface each job posting by naming the person that submitted the job, and will reference appropriate links to their blog - company - agency - etc.

    Here's the biggie:

I will provide additional love and accolades for all requests that are heavily laden with humor. Yes, yes, we've got to keep it professional.

If you've managed to miss the previous links that will take you to the carnival of the job search, click HERE.

So, it's time to get your blog on, Recruiters.

I look forward to the carnival.

The most important word in job search is ...

I recently posted this question on LinkedIn,

"The most important word in job search is..."

I received great responses from all over the world, and had a difficult time doling out the "best response" rating.

When it comes to recruiting, however, I'm a "relationship-kind-of-guy," so I had to side with Homula for the best answer: relationships.

Including Mike's answer, here's a few of the other answers I really liked:

Michael Homula (Bearing Fruit Consulting Group) - Relationships

Susie Wyshak (SuperViva Life Lists/SuperViva Blog)- LinkedIn

    Dean Tracy (DeanTracyJobs.com) - Networking

Anthony Timmons (Cox Communications) - Persistence

    Greg Saukulak (ExecuSearch) - Vision

Mark Scrimshire (EKIVE / WebServicesJournal) - Networking and Relationships

Amitabh Thard (Strategic America) - Strategy

David Mortimer (F10 Recruitment) - Honesty

    Tom Vongbandith - Integrity

Rich Kolikof (Winthrop Research Group) - Preparation

    Kristina Runyeon-Odeberg (Obigo) - Open-Minded

Bryan Burgmaier (T-Mobile USA) - Timing

Kieran Hawe (Vertrue, Inc / What's most important) Adaptability

Julie Martino (Project 1.27) - Search (yourself, goals, growth, opportunity, org's, contacts)

    Jacob Bonenberger (Bristol-Myers Squibb) - Nepotism ;)

    Peter Nguyen (Talentelle) - Free

Alfredo Ascanio (Universidad Simon Bolivar /Blog /Askain) - Expert!

    Alex Dragomirescu (Enviroshake /ZoomInfo) Nerve!

    Joe Slevin - Work!

    Eduardo Marx Silva (Synthean) Imagination

Mike Schwinn - (Focus on Performance) - Resilient

Robert Mueller (Remote Technologies Group) - Friends

Gautam Ghosh (The Imagence Partners) - The role

Mhirra Yung (TMP Worldwide) - Best!

    Robert Etheridge (GetTheJob.com) - Caution

Thanks to all "LinkedIn Answers" participants!

Even in short supply, geeks rule the world

    Two truths are self-evident:

    1. Geeks rule the world
    2. Geeks are in short supply
It's a good thing the there's not a numbers requirement to maintain our rightful place on the throne.

In the Wisconsin State Journal, Judy Newman reminds us of the problem facing companies in need of geeks as she explains that many colleges are not doing a good job of preparing the students for the needs of our hi-tech marketplace.

When coupled with the fact that students are losing interest in hi-tech majors, one realizes the breadth of the problem.

Newman explains that from 2002 to 2005, the number of students enrolled in IT programs at U.S. universities dropped 50 percent.

    Holy toledo - 50?!

These numbers would lead me to believe that today's students really don't care about $$ aspect tied to geek jobs. Jim Rice, past president of the Information Technology Association of Wisconsin recently said,

IT salaries are higher than most. College graduates with a bachelor's degree are making as much as $50,000 to $60,000 a year and once they have four or five years of experience, their salaries can double.

Nuff said. It's time to increase the numbers in geekdom. While we're not in danger of losing our rightful place on the throne, but it's clear that we need to do sooo much more than just dangle the potential of high-income. Our universities need to get their arses in gear and upgrade technology to adequately prepare our geeks to make an immediate impact in the marketplace.

Otherwise, we're just a few short years away from the day when the charismatic sales leaders will glad-hand us off the throne.

    Yikes. It's a horrible thought.

    25 Dream Jobs for Geeks

    Source: JobProfiles.org

Here's the top 5 Dream Jobs for Geeks from the JobProfiles.org library. Get the entire list of 25 HERE.

    Game Tester
Let’s be honest. There are three things you want most in life:

    1) A date with Natalie Portman (stalking does not count as a date)

    2) a Sci-Fi Channel (never mind)

    3) to play video games all day.

While it is true there is nothing holding you back from playing video games all day already (and growing into the couch), you actually can make a living at it. Even though it requires you to leave the comforts of your moist, dark basement and minimally interacting with humans, game testing can be a lucrative career.

    Web or Graphic Designer
What better way to exercise your intellectual superiority over others than to put those lonely summers of reading HTML handbooks to good use. By now, of course, you’ve mastered HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, CSS, and of course Pearl.

You’re a master hand-coder and Dreamweaver is a joke: no real programmer uses short cuts. You dream in script and eat div tags for breakfast.

    IT guy
Ok, it seems typical: the geeky IT guy at the company who sits in a dark cube mumbling insistently about the incredible lack of adequate air conditioning for the server. But think about it: not only will you make a grip (even a grip and a half) of dough because most people are too stupid to learn how to network with the office printer, but you can also remotely log into the system and see what that jerk Tom is really doing when he’s especially quiet in his cube: Working diligently, I think not.

Chatting on Oprah.com’s message boards? Bingo.

Sales person at the Sharper Image
You’re passionate about electronics- and people are fools with cash. What better way to get revenge on these frivolous spenders than by selling them electrical garbage. And if you’re not that bitter or malicious, how cool would it be than to play around with merchandise all day, learn about the latest and greatest gadgets coming out, and relax in one of those overstuffed massage chairs. Try not to enjoy the vibrating shoulder massagers too much.

    Editor
You read the dictionary as a child, and on hot summer days, you would conjugate verbs while sucking on ice cubes. This job is for you. As an editor, your thick, black rimmed glasses only accentuate your enormous brain-capacity for ferreting out sentence fragments and editorial faux-pas.

People run to you, oh wise one, to inquire about gerunds and you simply sigh and laugh to yourself. You can use a fat, red pen to mark-up errors to drive-home the fact that everyone is an idiot. And of course, with a preposition you never end your sentences. All hail you grammar god/goddess.

    Top Ten Job Hunting Myths

Kiplinger's Erin Burt posted these 10 job hunting myths over 2 years ago, and I just found them posted by Clipmark's skwirlinator.

However, many of these ideas have aged well over the past two years and I believe they are relevant for today's college grads.

My commentary is the italicized text below Erin's words of wisdom:

    1. Finding a job after college will be quick and easy.

Stevie-baby's been saying this for a long time and nothing has changed.

    2. The Internet is the best place to look for a job.

    NetworkNetworkNetwork!

    3. I'll make at least $40,000 at my first job out of college.
Maybe, but don't pre-spend assuming it to be so.
In fact, don't pre-spend period (esp if it's for a car!). Get over it - call Dave Ramsey if you need a good financial slap in the face.

    4. There's no room for negotiation with an entry-level salary.

There's no better time to start honing your salary-negotiation-skills.

    5. The person who gets hired is the one who can do the job best.

The person who gets hired is just the one who got the offer - plain 'n simple.

    6. A well-designed resume' will boost my chances of getting noticed.

There may be some truth to this but I'd still rather take my chances with a well-designed resume. Just ask Louise.

    7. What I think of an employer doesn't matter as much as what s/he thinks of me.

When it comes to employer-employee match, it's certainly better if one's heart and head are in sync.

    8. If I plaster the Web with my resume', I'll receive more interviews.
    NETWORKNETWORKNETWORK.

    9. If a company isn't currently hiring, I can't get an interview.

If I'm the right person for the job, it matters not whether the company has a current job opening.

    10. If I don't know what I want to do after graduation, I should go to graduate school.

Chances are, you'll finish grad school and still not have a clue. But there's many grad schools willing to take your hard-earned $$.

Check out the entire Kiplinger article (with Erin's commentary on each bullet) HERE.

    Recruiting is marketing. Try jobcasting.

    GotZapp (mobile social network)

Wireless Duniya posted today about a new mobile social network site called GotZapp.

GotZapp lets users create mini-websites with the "Ziranda" mobile content creator. The "Zapps" (images, text, music) can then be rated, commented on and downloaded by other users.

    Cool stuff.

Maybe we'll see some mini job search sites pop up soon.

Jobs in Pods (podcast your jobs)

    As announced today on Recruiting.com:

"Chris Russell who is no stranger to the recruiting blogosphere has been busy lately. While the blogosphere was busy debating whether or not it has any influence in the industry or not, Chris started a new business. It’s called Jobs in Pods.

Essentially, it is a service that allows hiring managers to record an audio interview about either the company or a particular position they are anxious to fill. It’s a good idea because for the most part, job postings are not all that exciting. The idea here is to add some life to it.

Once the interview is complete, Chris will submit it to a number of places potential job seekers can listen to it. You can also have it widgetized and place it on your website. And speaking of websites, Chris has a done a great job in setting up his and everything you need to know about Jobs in Pods is there."

I like what Chris is doing, and that's why I did a podcast with him (click HERE to listen).

But after listening to the entire podcast, I agree with Jason - nobody wants to hear that much of me. We'll get the next one down to 3 min's or less.

As the crusty ol' preacher learned from his days in the pulpit...."leave 'em wantin' more."

So why would an employer want to do this? Well, as Chris notes below, "Recruiting is Marketing."

And, as Anil Dash says so well, it helps me
"connect with the people I care about."
Nice job, Chris. I look forward to working with you and finding new ways to connect with those people that are important to me.

How to Ace Your Job Interview: 88 Surefire Tips and Tricks

Since NASCAR's giving you a break this weekend before they head to Vegas, you've got no excuses - it's time to prepare for your interview. And, lucky for you, the Online Education Database recently served up a detailed job prep article to help you cover your bases.

Although I don't like using the words "Job Interview" and "Tricks" in the same post title (interview preparation is all about hard work and practice - not tricks), I couldn't find a single trick in the entire article.

The article is rather long, but I do recommend it for those fairly new to the job hunt trail. Click HERE to read the article in it's entirety (all 88 tips).

Here's an abbreviated version which includes a few of my faves (by the way, if you put in the time - practice - hard work and you still don't ace the interview, let me know. I'll send you my lucky pink socks):

#1 - Practice your writing skills. In today's Internet-oriented world, good communication skills are crucial. Technical writing and documentation seems to be a weak point for many new grads.

#2 - Stay updated. Read and subscribe to relevant weblogs, magazines, and newspapers. Use web feed subscription tools like Bloglines or Newsgator Online Edition.

#4 - Start a blog. Demonstrate your knowledge of a topic related to a field you'd like to be employed in by writing a blog and mentioning it in your resume.

#11 - Don't lie on your resume. It's not a novel. Mention skills you're capable of. Say "learning such and such" for everything else.

#29 - Try networking. Career networking websites such as LinkedIn or JibberJobber can go a long way toward helping you find a job.

#49 - Be prepared. Know where you're supposed to go. Check their Web site, and call in if you have to. (My favorite mantra begs to be repeated here: There is no substitute for preparation).

#59 - Make a good first impression and maintain it. Mirroring is a powerful technique if used subtly, no matter the interviewer's mood.

#61 - Be succinct. Don't be a Chatty Cathy; don't tell your life story. Give a bit of detail instead of just "yes" and "no".

#79 - Remember what it's about. Think "what's in it for them", not just "what's in it for me". Both parties have to benefit.

#84 - Say thank you. Thank the interviewer and the receptionist - be genuine. (do not forget the "thank you" letter/card - I don't care what the so-called experts have to say about this).

#87 - Keep an interview log. It'll help you track the state of each application (sent application, pending interview, interview complete, followed up, rejected, etc.). Include dates.

Robust Market for Geeks Means Headaches for CIO's

The job market for IT pros hasn't been this robust since the dot-com crash in the late 1990s.

Unfortunately for CIOs, this means fierce competition for hiring new staff and holding on to the staff they already have.

The average IT salary will grow by 3.8% in 2007, according to a survey of 160 IT organizations conducted by Mark A. McManus, vice president of IT research at Irvine, Calif.-based research firm Computer Economics Inc. Average salary growth was just 2.5% in 2005 and 3% in 2006, so salaries are clearly accelerating -- although slowly.

McManus said IT workers are looking around to see if they can maximize their earnings.

CIOs need to know that rival IT shops are not only hiring but expanding as well. Fifty percent of organizations are increasing their headcount by at least 5% this year, and 25% are growing staff by at least 15%.

Nokia May Slash up to 700 Jobs

Nokia announced on Thursday that it intends to make reductions in its global workforce over the next few months. According to the company's press release, the reason for the workforce reduction is to "improve the focus and efficiency of some of its R&D and related sales and marketing activities and internal IT operations." Up to 700 employees across the globe will be laid off, and 340 of those getting the axe will be in Finland, Nokia's country of origin.

Some of the positions Nokia's thinking about eliminating are 360 employees in Enterprise Solutions, 30 in Customer and Market Operations, 130 in I.T., and 140 within the Technology Platforms unit. Nokia hopes to offer affected employees other positions within the company, and to introduce voluntary opportunities for reduction (which usually means early retirement, generous severance packages, etc.)

Nokia has been dominant in the mobile phone market, but clearly the company is not happy with the status quo. This is a pretty aggressive move for a company that seems to be on top--perhaps, Nokia's execs felt that this is what needs to be done to ensure it remains in that position.

Read more from the Nokia press release.

Bloggers Can Make Money, But Most Keep Day Job

Great article at the Christian Science Monitor about bloggers and the money they make.

Worth the read - check it out HERE.

    Here's an excerpt:

This past November, a survey by problogger.net of 732 self-selected respondents found that of the 625 bloggers using AdSense, 45 percent were making at least $100 a month. Another survey of 104 bloggers at a blogger summit last week in New York found roughly a third making that money, not necessarily with AdSense.

Nearly one-sixth in both surveys made at least $1,000 a month. These samples,of course, skew heavily toward the more committed and successful bloggers.

Wireless Factors ... are you connected?

I met Jay Deragon on LinkedIn and quickly found out that this guy is super-connected in the wireless space - so I knew I needed to hook up.

He introduced me to Wireless Factors and I really like what Jay and the rest of the Advisory Board members are putting together.

The mission of WF is to serve the "networking" needs of the global Wireless Communications Community, and their proprietary networking platform makes it easy for people and companies to connect.

According to Jay, WF got its kick-start twelve months ago by a group of industry professionals who wanted to create a platform that would help the industry and its suppliers improve biz dev and social networking relations.

Although much of the content will be subscription based in the future, for a short time period the content is free to all users.

My thought? Join now and check out the content while it's free - then decide for yourself.

If you join, please send me a "contact request."

I look forward to connecting with you on Wireless Factors.

Silicon Valley leads the way. The tech center added more than 33,000 jobs in the 12 months ended June 30, according to a report released Sunday by Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, a regional public policy group."

All the Tech News You Need (in 20 min's or less)

Great post by ValleyWag: Get all the tech news you need (in 20 minutes a day)!

    Here's a quick recap from VWag's post:

The tech industry is huge and ungainly, but it's not impossible to get a grasp of its daily news. There are ways to deeply understand tech through hours of reading per day, but for the busy pro with only 20 minutes for tech news, use the following daily process.

Optional time-saver: Instead of reading the sources below by going to the different sites, consider reading the RSS fees on Google Reader or Bloglines.

    1. Skim the headlines of these top news sources:

    Digg: Technology
    Techmeme
    GigaOM
    Engadget

    2. Skim these sources for commentary:

    Paul Kedrosky's Infectious Greed
    Valleywag
    Techdirt

    3. Read these mainstream sources:

    CNET News
    NY Times Technology
    Financial Times

    4. Once or twice a week, check in with these sources:

    BusinessWeek
    Wired News
    Wired Magazine

    5. Once a week, listen to this podcast during your commute: This Week in Tech

I like the resources VWag mentions, but might substitute a few of my faves:

DailyWireless, TechCrunch, and Unstrung (course, he might figure that TechCrunch gets all the pub it needs).

AT&T: Free Mobile to Landline Calls.....whoop de doo

    NetworkWorld reports,

"Following on the heels of their mobile video announcement, Cingular and AT&T last week announced that the Cingular Wireless brand would take the AT&T name. But what we believe was the more important announcement last week is of a new offer for unlimited free calling between wireless and wireline phone numbers."

This story is all over the stinkin' Internet.

And I just have to ask...."is it really that big of a deal....really?"

C'mon, they've had the capacity to do this for years. But they finally decide to unfurl this "awesome" solution just because AT&T purchased another company and bequeathed upon them the blessing of the AT&T name?

Go figure. Well, at a time when many of us are giving up our landlines (and the checks we've been sending to AT&T for the last 30+ years), I'm so impressed that we're being told we can have free mobile to landline calls.

There's a phrase we used in Junior High....let's see, it went something like this:

    Whoop De Doo.

LegalGeek Seeks In-House Opportunity in Hi-Tech

I recently joined MyBlogLog and have networked with some really terrific people in the past couple of weeks.

One of those contacts is a recovering attorney named Matthew Kish (I say that jokingly, of course).

One of the things I like about Matt is his sense of humor. Of course, that might tell you a lot about me, but hey, in this business, affection for humor is a life-saver. Matt would probably say the same about law.

After a 10 year legal career, Matt adjusted his sails (or, in his case, surfboard) and started a company called Gringo Works, Inc., where he serves as a Management Consultant. However, I think he has a real desire to pursue an in-house legal opportunity with a hi-tech company.

So here's my shout-out to the recruiting world:

Check out Matthew Kish if you are looking for a sharp, tech-savvy lawyer with a decade of legal experience, and a fondness for the waves.
I've pasted a copy of Matt's resume below, but it's too small to make for an easy read.

You can reach him via his site: GringoWorks.com.

Or, send me an email and I'll put you in touch with him.

For watching ads, cellphone users will get perks

People often say they do not like advertisements, but that may change if the ads start lowering their cellphone bills.

U.S. carriers like Verizon, Sprint and AT&T are beginning to test and roll out advertising on mobile phone screens, but by 2008, cellphone advertising is likely to be more common.

In exchange, the companies say, their subscribers will enjoy improved mobile Internet services and content provided free or at reduced prices. Other companies like Virgin Mobile USA and Amp'd Mobile are taking the idea a step further, rewarding customers for viewing ads by lowering their cellphone bills.

Amp'd, a cellphone company that aims its marketing at 18- to 24-year-olds, will begin offering an opt-in advertising plan this year. Customers who sign up will gain access to free video games, shows and other content — if they are willing to put up with some ads.

Hot Advice For the Job Seeker, circa 1995

I changed careers back in 1996, deciding to pursue a career in recruiting. I'm now only eleven years removed from those happy days, but in terms of recruiting and technology, it seems (and looks!) like light years.

Check out this picture of Recruiting.com back in 1997. Yep, pre-Jason Davis.

Here's Monster back in Nov. 1996 (nice graphics).

Any other recruiters out there remember CareerMosaic?

    And our beloved, HeadHunter.net?

But, where are the blogs? Where's Google? Yahoo!? AOL? Where's the SEO buzz? Where's Cheezhead?

This is the earliest look I could find on our SEO Master (HERE). Hey, Joel, there must be something better than this, eh?

    Job Search Advice

I then decided to fish out one of my job search books from 1995 called, "Hook Up, Get Hired!" (The Internet Job Search Revolution). Great book... ...back in '95.

It's still for sale on Amazon, and they have 11 used and new starting at $0.51.
Word of advice: save your 2 bits; not much revolutionary advice left on these pages.

The section titled, "Jobs You Reach By World Wide Web," focused on the following sites:

    CareerMag.com
    Career Taxi
    CareerMosaic
    CareerWeb
    E-Span (remember the funky green
    color?)
    Monster Board
    MedSearch America
    HotWired
